Benoît Saint-Moulin

I am Senior Technical Artist and Visual Effects Program Coordinator at HEAJ (Haute École Albert Jacquard), where I bridge technical innovation and creative education in computer graphics and real-time technologies - combining hands-on technical work with academic leadership to train the next generation of digital artists and technical creators.

My path was built where the arts and technology meet - music, graphic arts, programming and research - and it started with the arrival of a Commodore 64. It led to the Original ArKaos Team (R&D), contributing to research, artistic implementation and concept development for early versions of this pioneering VJing software alongside founder Marco Hinic and Jessie Deep - work that also contributed to the early days of video mapping. A first prototype in 1997, carried by that momentum, grew into TDT3D's public launch in 1999 - a French-speaking 3D community I ran for twenty years and which gathered thousands of enthusiasts, becoming one of the most visited 3D multimedia communities of its time.

  • JArKaos, a version of ArKaos bundled with Jean-Michel Jarre's remix album Odyssey Through O2 (1998); 3D modeling of Tony Gillet's original Donkervoort while at SSW; a short 3D film starring a bee, made to test the Nintendo Dolphin console's capabilities after a job interview for the project.
  • Developer on TVPaint, Mirage Studio, Cycore's Cult3D and Demicron's WireFusion, plus tester exchanges with e-on Software (Vue & PlantFactory) and Softimage (FaceRobot).
  • Writer for 3D World magazine, sharing production experience with the wider community.
  • Helped build the bridge between SideFX and Ranch Computing, and ongoing collaborations with the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and other industry partners.
  • Recognized (2007-2011) by Belgium's Minister of Higher Education as the country's first "expert" in real-time 3D.

As Senior Lecturer and Technical Instructor, I coordinate HEAJ's Visual Effects program: curriculum development, industry partnerships, and teaching computer graphics and real-time technologies with a focus on procedural content generation and environmental design - Fractals and L-Systems in particular.

My technical work spans Houdini and Unity, AI integration, and programming in C#, Python, PHP and HTML5, with database (SQL) and cross-platform (Windows, Linux) foundations - including tools like BSM Tools and Spectra Workbench.

Beyond the technical side, I maintain an active creative practice in visual and musical arts under the Green Mayday project - more at benoitsaintmoulin.com.
